On the outskirts of Hamburg, on the banks of the Elbe sits Wedel, where a new, energy-efficient gas and steam turbine power plant is planned for the former coal-fired power station site. The new power station is positioned to the north of the river bank to allow the uninterrupted riverside promenade passage open to the public. While the majority of the existing station has been demolished, individually striking industrial relics and architecturally significant elements, such as the listed machine hall, are retained and put to cultural use.

A scheme designed by Architecture Initiative has recently been granted planning permission for Woolmore Primary School, a 4-storey new build project at the heart of the Blackwall Reach / Robin Hood Gardens regeneration masterplan. Projected population growth in East London is putting pressure on the education system and more school places are urgently required. Woolmore will provide over 700 places for pupils and create 60 new jobs for the local area.

Located in São Lourenço da Mata, the Recife metropolitan area, the Pernambuco Arena will have the capacity to seat 46,000 and will host the games in the group stage and quarter-final of the World Cup 2014. The Arena's surrounding area is partly made up of native forest, the Capibaribe River, water courses and environmental preserved areas, providing a unique character to the development. Furthermore, the location is close to the highway BR-408 and a future avenue that will connect the surrounding neighbourhoods and downtown Recife, making it a strategic location that will allow a fast and efficient access to the public.

2016 Rio Olympic Games venue closed due to structural problems with roof system

One of the key venues for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games has been closed due to structural complications with its roof system. The Joao Havelange Stadium, locally referred to as Engehao due to its location in the neighbourhood of Engenho de Dentro, was designed by Carlos Porto and completed in 2007 for the Pan-American Games. Opening just one month prior to the opening of the Games, the stadium was over budget at $192m, six times the original estimate.

AECOM and Zaha Hadid Architects secure Al Wakrah Stadium contract for FIFA World Cup

Zaha Hadid Architects and AECOM have been selected to act as design consultants on the Al Wakrah Stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadium in Qatar. Located on a site 12 miles south of Doha, the stadium will hold 45,000 spectators during the international sporting event and be reduced to a capacity of 20,000 spectators after the FIFA World Cup has come to a close. The stadium will be designed by Albert Speer & Partner GmbH with AECOM and Zaha Hadid Architects as design consultants.
